[Hymn #26] [Movement]

[Tear is on break at the cafe. She's out back practicing strikes and blocks with a broom since the manager is making her leave her weapons at home these days (they scare off the costumers, he says). Some of her hair is falling out of her ponytail at this point, and she'll doubtless have to fix it before the manager allows her to go back to waiting tables.

Fighting air isn't quite the same as sparring with Legretta, but at least she can relearn the motions, and at least the movement interrupts her thinking about what Van might be doing back in her own world.]

(I wonder how I can get back. Are hunting down suspicious objects and being present when the island does something strange going to be enough?)

[Swing.]

(Van. What are you up to? Who else have you dragged into this?)

[Swing.]

(I don't understand. Is this "Score" really such a terrible thing? What is it exactly and why do you hate it so much?)

[Swing.]

(I'm so sure there are people around me suffering right now. Rena seemed sad... I need to do something.)

[Swings harder. The motions yanks at the muscles in her arms and forces her to stop.]

[Tear smiles slightly to herself and steps over to where Rena is. She begins helping to pick up the spilled forks.]

...Are you sure you weren't watching me practice with the broom?

[She bends down and finishes picking up the remainder of the utensils.]

[Tear smiled softly and offered the other girl the forks she had scattered by accident.]

If it bothers you, I can practice elsewhere from now on. I'm just trying to get in as much training as I can in case something unexpected happens.

I don't really mind. You're by no means the first person who's come by and stopped to watch me train today. If you're actually interested, I could show you some of the basic techniques I've remembered.

You see, I think I was some sort of knight back where I come from...

Well, an Oracle Knight at least. I'm not sure what the difference is yet, but I've been trained in basic combat and controlling fonons.

[Tear offered the other girl a fond smile.]

I'm not that amazing, although I guess I'd be pretty impressed by something I had never met before, too.

All right. I don't think watching someone swing a broom around would be very exciting, but there are a few other things I've remembered that I could show you.

So... would you like to see what I can do now, or should we wait until another time? I believe my break will be over momentarily, but the hymn I know is very short, and still incomplete.

Okay, okay. Let's see then...

[Tear glances around for a test subject, finding a bee buzzing around a nearby pot of geraniums.]

Um.. here, how about this insect? I think it might work on him.

[Tear took a deep breath and began to concentrate seventh fonons. Melodies... abyss... The tone was soft and kind of sad, wasn't it? That's the way she had sung it before.]

...Twei rei tsuae croix ryo twei tsuae...

[A few seconds later a glyph appeared beneath the bee, its wings slowed and then stopped, and it fluttered to land in the soil at the base of the plant, dormant and apparently asleep.]

W-Wow! What'd you do, what'd you do? Is it okay...?

It should be fine, Rena. I sang a fonic hymn and put it to sleep. If I'm right, it'll awaken shortly.

W-Wow...that's like magic. It is magic, isn't it? Rena didn't know you had magic, Tear!

It's fonons, actually.

The results are a little like this "magic" concept I've heard about, but it's not the same thing. Magic seems like it just sort of happens. To perform artes with fonons, you actually have to concentrate and draw them into yourself.

It's somewhat difficult to explain. Basically the hymn works as long as I focus fonons and recite the correct words to the correct melody with the correct feelings and meaning flooding my thoughts.

[The bee is starting to flutter its wings again at this point. Tear brushes the compliment off, smiling slightly.]

I'm not even the only person here who uses fonons, Rena.
It's not that special. I'm sure there are "amazing" things that you can do as well. Everyone has talents after all.
